Opal Ball Chumley, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Life Care Center of Morehead.

She was born on May 14, 1916 in Harlan County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Alex and Maude Crider Ball.

Mrs. Chumley was a retired schoolteacher from the Rowan County School system and she also taught at Breckinridge Training School in Morehead. She and her husband also operated Chumley's Shoe Center in Morehead for many years. She was a very active member of the Morehead United Methodist Church before her illness. She taught Sunday school for many years and also led a prayer group at the church. She was a vital part of the United Methodist Women for many years. She and her husband also began the rose garden at the church and it still thrives today and will stand as a tribute to both of them for many years to come. Her entire life revolved around her Christianity and her faith. Her spirit and inspiration will remain with her family and friends forever.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles C. Chumley, her son, C. Larry Chumley, three brothers, Roy Ball, Green Ball and Gene Ball and two sisters, Mildred Sergent and Helen Harris.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Chumley Ingles of Morehead, three granddaughters, Loren Chumley (Scott) of Nashville, Tennessee, Lari Chumley Beasley (Brent) of Mooresville, North Carolina and Tamara Ingles Horn of Fayetteville, Arkansas, one brother, Ivan Ball (Mona) of North Miami Shores, Florida, one sister, Roma Jean Pedde of Tavares, Florida, two great-granddaughters, Kelsie Beasley and Alex Beasley both of Mooresville, North Carolina, her special daughter-in-law, Lorla Boswell (Bill) of Kingsport, Tennessee and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, January 18, 2008 in the sanctuary of the Morehead United Methodist Church with Rev. Bruce Nettleton and Dr. Jack Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in the Lee Cemetery. Visitation is after 11:00 A.M. Friday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Carroll Loy, Steve Vice, Daniel Mason, Drew McNeill, Robert Neff, Mike Mincey, Ted Pass, Ryan Neff and David Saxon and honorary pallbearers will be The United Methodist Women.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Morehead United Methodist Church Building Fund or Memorial Fund, 227 West Main Street, Morehead, KY 40351 or St. Claire Hospice/Palliative Care, 304 West Second Street, Morehead, KY 40351.
