Mrs. Kathleen Johnson Skeens, 79, of Bluestone Road, Morehead, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2013 in the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.
She was born on February 3, 1934, in Menifee County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Pritchard and Martha Wells Johnson.
Mrs. Skeens was a retired schoolteacher.
She began her teaching career in 1952. She taught in one-room schools in Menifee County and Rowan County. Mrs. Skeens taught all grades in Havanah School and Coal Cave School in Menifee and Bratton Branch School in Rowan. Later, she taught in the one-room school of Johnson in Morehead. She graduated from Morehead College in 1964 and finished her career with Rowan County Schools at Tilden Hogge Elementary.
After retirement, she enjoyed both vegetable and flower gardening, canning and spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Skeens was of the Church of God faith and a member of the Rowan County Retired Teachers and Kentucky Education Association.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Owen Skeens, who passed away on December 12, 2010, five brothers, John Nelson Johnson, Ronnie Johnson, Hershel Clint Johnson, Roger Johnson and an infant brother, Kenneth Johnson and two sisters, Faye Gillespie and an infant sister, Josephine Johnson.
Survivors include her daughters, Kimberly (James) Little and Karen ("Jody") and Archie Littleton all of Morehead, one sister, Phyllis Robinson of Clarksville, Indiana, four very special grandchildren, Pvt. Gabriel Ryan Littleton, Morgan Gabrielle Littleton, Garrett Owen Little and Griffin James Little all of Morehead, and her sisters-in-law, Carolyn Johnson, Jo Ann Johnson and Hildreth Johnson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, March 17, 2013 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Pastor Allan Hutchinson and Jimmy Scott Orrick officiating.
Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is after 5:00 P.M. Saturday.
Pallbearers will be Archie Littleton, James Little, Bobby Wells, Pvt. Gabriel Ryan Littleton, Garrett Little, Griffin Little and Jimmy Scott Orrick.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Johnson, Larry Johnson, Warner Skeens, Johnny Skeens, Gregory Skeens, Randy Robinson and Danny Robinson.
