John Will Holbrook, Jr., age 79 former Morehead Mayor and prominent businessman, passed away Friday November 26, 2010 in the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington after an extended illness.
Born December 21, 1930 in Olive Hill, KY, he was the son of the late John Will Holbrook, Sr. and Dorothy Miller Holbrook. He was also preceded in death by a brother Thomas Anderson Holbrook and a sister, Nancy H. Calvert.
John is survived by his wife Nan Browning Holbrook whom he married October 23, 1951; three sons, James Thomas Holbrook and his wife Janet S. of Fort Myers, Florida, John Will Holbrook III and his wife Yvonne K. of Pfafftown, North Carolina and Samuel (Sam) Holbrook and his wife Susie of Lexington, KY. Five grandchildren; Jay Holbrook, Chris Holbrook, Brad Holbrook, Adam Holbrook and Amy Holbrook and two great-grandchildren; Bella Grace Holbrook and Jonah Holbrook.
John was a member of the Morehead First United Methodist Church, he attended Morehead State University, served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, was a member of the Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654, York Rite and the El Hasa Shrine Temple.
He along with his family owned and operated the Imperial Cleaners in Morehead for many years.
John served on the Morehead City Council from 1978 to 1981 and as Mayor of Morehead from 1982 to 1987.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 30, 2010 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Dr. Jack Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in the Lee Cemetery with full military rites by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.
Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Monday at Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home.
Masonic rites by Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654 will be conducted 7:30 P.M. Monday evening at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested contributions to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 1900 Richmond Road, Lexington, KY 40502.
Pall Bearers will be Thomas A. Holbrook, Jr., Ted Trent, Joseph Wolterman, Jr., Carl Sizemore, Steve Crail and Dexter Evans.
Honorary Pall Bearers will be Dr. Ed Scott, Dr. David Booth, Jim Browning, Danny Lewis, Bob Fay, Jack Carter, Joey Perkins, Eddie Thomas, Sr., Don Hardin and Jack Roe.
Also serving as Honorary Pall Bearers will be all former employees of the Imperial Cleaners and all City of Morehead employees who worked during his administration.
