With great sadness, the family of Gilbert L. King Sr. announces his passing on Friday morning, February 16, 2018 at his home after a two year battle with cancer.
He was born on February 28, 1931 to the late Earl and Gertrude Hutton King in Byesville, Ohio, graduating High School there in 1948.
Raised during the great depression with a strong work ethic, he was a dedicated employee of Tennessee Gas Pipeline for 41 years, in the compressor and measurement departments. During these years, this was his second family.
On September 3, 1949, he married Martha Rose Steele of Cambridge, Ohio.
Gib loved family, Christmas, Ohio State Football and UK Basketball. He was a skilled handyman and woodworker and was baptized at the Methodist Church in 1950.
During his life, he was a grade school basketball coach, little league coach, PTA member, member of Toastmasters and the Lions Club. He never met a stranger and always enjoyed spending time with his friends.
In 1999, he returned to Kentucky to spend his last years with his family. He will live on in the hearts and minds of his family and friends. Gib is not gone, just gone before.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Abby King, four brothers and one sister.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 68 years, Martha Rose Steele King, children, Gilbert L. King Jr. of Mt. Sterling, Jane Roark and her husband, Henry (“Sonny”) of Hillsboro, Kentucky, John Earl King and his wife, Kathy of Morehead and Mitchel L. King and his wife, Kellie of Cooksville, Tennessee, one sister, Carol Collins of Cambridge, Ohio, eight grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Pop”, Hank Roark and his wife, Stephanie, Hunter Roark and his wife, Caitlin, Gilbert King III and his wife, Ashley, Sara Garcia and her husband, Josie, Laura King and her companion, Canon Vice, Boone King, Ashton King and Joel King and his wife, Katie, one step-granddaughter, Adrienne Rose and eight great-grandchildren, Brandon, Tristan, Emma, Matthew, Christian, Bryson, Linnie Rose and Mia.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, February 18, 2018 in the chapel of the Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Morehead with Brother Don Rivers officiating.
Burial will follow in the Cranston Cemetery.
Visitation is after 6:00 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Gilbert L. King Jr., John Earl King, Mitchel L. King, Hunter Roark, Gibby Lee King, Boone King and Sonny Roark.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Duncan, William R. “Peanut” Hartfield, Sam and Evelyn Cornelius, Dr. Charles Derrickson, Frank and Gladys McDaniel, Marjorie Ford and Billy and Patty Hough.
