Mrs. Edith Johnson Ellington, 89, of Gilmer Texas formerly of Morehead and New Carlisle, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2009 in Gilmer.
She was born on September 15, 1920 in Morgan County near West Liberty, Kentucky, a daughter of the late John Newton Johnson and Vena Haney Johnson.
After her marriage to John Paul Ellington, she lived most of her life on a farm in Rowan County on the North Fork of the Licking River. She loved the farm and Kentucky and lived there until she was forced to move to Ohio because of illness. Nine years ago, she moved to Gilmer, Texas to live with her daughter, Judy. Mrs. Ellington loved to walk in the hills of Kentucky and worked to save the American Chestnut tree by taking care of young trees. Mrs. Ellington was a hunter, excellent marksman and an avid reader. She was an excellent cook and was well-known for her fried chicken and the wonderful pies she made for Thanksgiving. She loved her family and was much loved for her thoughtfulness and devotion.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Paul Ellington who passed away in 1991, three brothers, John Newton Johnson, Jr., Edward Johnson and Melven Johnson and one sister, Lorene Horton.
Survivors include one son, Johnie M. Ellington and his wife, Helen of Morehead, two daughters, Judy L. Ellington Green of Gilmer, Texas and Loretta C. Ellington Mutschler of New Carlisle, Ohio, six grandchildren, Larry R. Mutschler, Jr. of New Carlisle, Ohio, Jacqueline C. Mutschler of Houston, Texas, Kandice R. LaGrone and Shane Lakes both of Gilmer, Texas, Timothy B. Fultz of Lakeland, Florida, and Felicia C. Ellington Howard of Morehead, ten great-grandchildren, Larry R. Mutschler III and Shaylah M. Mutschler of New Carlisle, Ohio, Michael A. Wille and Nicholas J. Wille of Houston, Texas, Brie E. LaGrone and Jacob P. LaGrone of Gilmer, Texas, Justin C. Lakes, W. Tristan Lakes and Joseph N. Lakes all of Gilmer, Texas and Micheala C. Howard of Morehead and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Ellington requested to be returned to her home, the hills of Kentucky and be buried in the Ellington Family Cemetery.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 Noon Saturday, November 14, 2009 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Ellington Cemetery. Visitation is after 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 14, 2009.
