Earl Skaggs

Mr. Earl J. Skaggs, Age 88 of Sugar Loaf Mountain Road, Morehead, passed away Friday, February 18, 2011 at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington.

He was born January 9, 1923 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Merida and Arrettia Willett Skaggs.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Skaggs and two sisters; Lula Mae Watkins and Ruth Eloise Meyer.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Thelma Black Skaggs, their children; Earlene and Ron Tompkins, Ronald and Ann Skaggs and Arrettia and Ishmal Lamb.

Five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Also, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was a longtime member of the Morehead First Church of God.

As a young man of 17 years old, he went to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Idaho. Afterwards, he served in World War II. Upon honorable discharge from the military he met Thelma and moved to Morehead in 1946.

He worked a brief time as a carpenter and later went to work for Albert Patton at the Dr. Pepper Company.

A few years later he went to work for Gordon's Potato Chip Company as a supervisor and a route salesman. His route included Rowan, Morgan, Elliott, Carter and Magoffin Counties. He retired after 30 years of service from Gordon's.

After retiring the first time he worked for Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home for two years and then worked for Dr. Johannes Evans at the Kentucky Eye Institute. He was loved by all the patients and employees. He then retired again after ten years to spend time with his family.

He was a very active member of the Morehead Lions Club where he served in several offices and had served as Chairman of the Eyeglass Committee.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Morehead First Church of God with Pastor Allan Hutchinson officiating.

Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Full military rites will be conducted at the graveside by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.

Visitation at Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM Monday and after 10 AM Tuesday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Ron Tompkins, Lee Tompkins, Billy Vick, Mark Tompkins, Brent Skaggs and Keith Lamb.
