Dr. Paul A. Raines, 86, of Morehead, passed away Monday, October 8, 2012 after an extended illness.
He was born on November 20, 1925 in Jersey City, New Jersey to the late Arnold W. Raines and Elsie Eckers Raines but always said his life actually began the day he met Muriel his beloved wife for 62 years.
Devoted husband, loving father, dedicated educator and proud American, Dr. Raines lived his life serving those around him. Joining the army at age 18 and fighting on the front lines in World War II, Dr. Raines was a decorated war veteran. After serving his country, Dr. Raines attended Seton Hall for undergraduate studies, then attended University of Iowa for post graduate work. He began his professional career as a physical therapist but continued his education and ultimately earned a PhD in kinesiology.
Although he lived in several states early in his career, Dr. Raines moved his family to Morehead in 1966 to teach at the University and Morehead became he and his wife's adopted home town. Quickly settling into small town life, Dr Raines became active in the MSU men's club, officiated for USTA track meets and served as an official for the swim team. Deeply committed to his religion, Dr. Raines was a loyal member of Jesus Our Savior Catholic Church. A talented and dedicated teacher, Dr. Raines taught in the department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Morehead State University from 1966 until 1994. Not only did he impart knowledge and information to his students, he respected them enough to remember them by name and take time to get to know them as people.
Greatly loved and deeply missed, Dr. Raines leaves behind his beloved wife Muriel, daughters Joan Raines-Phillips and husband Dan of Lawrenceburg, KY, Donna Wallace and husband Grayling of Bellingham, MA, and Elise Scully and husband Dr. Kevin Scully of Lexington, KY and sons Keith Raines and wife Michelle of Salvisa, KY, Lloyd Raines and wife Jane of Anchorage, AK and Craig Raines of Morehead.
